Utamaro Kitagawa was the main Ukiyo-e master at the turn of the 18th century. The artist was fascinated by nature and the beautiful geisha of the Yoshiwara district, which he showed in his woodcuts. He was the first in Japanese art to depict women in busts. He often used the non-contouring technique of shaping the figure. The painterly nature of Utamaro Kitagawa's works was the subject of inspiration for French impressionists at the end of the 19th century.
